The view from Cerro Alto. Pretty darn high!

The view from Cerro Alto. Pretty darn high!

What I Learned

  • Oh, I learned an awful lot about buying cars. Call around for quotes. Don’t be upsold. Don’t budge on what you want. Figure out exactly what you need before you walk on the lot. Watch for insane APR deals if you’re financing. And be nice! I really do believe that salespeople are more open to helping out nice (but firm!) folks…but maybe that’s just being a Pollyanna and they’ll completely use you. It could go either way.
  • I also discovered that Cerro Alto is the best hike on the California Central Coast. For reals. It’s about a three mile hike up one of the tallest mountains in the county, and it has views of the Pacific Ocean on one side and all the green hills on the other. It has a fairly strong ascent, so you feel like you’re definitely working out, but it’s never punishing enough to not be enjoyable. Plus, there are all sorts of amazing smelling sage and kind of scary giant lizards. Go to it, everyone!
  • Only in Dubai. People have been escaping the huge loans they’ve built up in that crazy country, and they have been leaving behind their abandoned Ferraris. Now they’re cluttering up the place. What a weird problem.

The peacock at the Austin Zoo let me get wayyyy too close.

The peacock at the Austin Zoo let me get wayyyy too close.

It’s been a week of watching a lot of baseball and old movies on TV instead of actually getting anything done. Well done, me. And it’s off to the redwoods this weekend for my cousin’s wedding!

What I Learned

  • NASA is working on making a pizza printer?! WHAT. I’m ready to end the fight against morbid obesity and just invest in one of these. You may have to forklift me out of my house in about 50 years though…worth it.
  • The Pinnacles are now a national park! I’m way behind the times on this one, but I had no idea. This was a field trip destination for pretty much every class at my junior high, but most people don’t know about it. And also, boooo to the new Soledad slogan. The old one’s unintentional irony was amazing.

Oh heyyyy Avon pink Escalade!

What I Learned

  • The best laid plans can go awry…and can really bite you in the butt, even if you were the person who was on top of everything! Ugh. If anyone knows someone looking for a summer bedroom sublet in Austin, please please please let me know. I’d post the Craigslist ad here, but the internet’s scary y’all.

Ramen from East Side Kings! Yum!

This is a short post today, because I spent the middle of the week on vacation in Houston instead of hanging out on the internet. The real world actually won for once! Weird!

What I Learned

  • Houston is actually a really pretty city. The area where I stayed had some of the biggest oak trees I’ve ever seen, lots of little parks, shady lanes and world class museums. I’d love to go back and stay longer next time!
  • A big thunderstorm is not the best time to start dog-sitting. Poor puppy. She’s losing her mind.

Links

  • Love these state ink stamps! Not sure what I’d use them for, but I think I’d like both a California and a Texas!
  • Although I’m a bit smaller now, I very much straddled the plus size/straight size world for a really long time…and it’s really hard! Straight sizes may be a tiny bit small, but things cut in the plus size style swallow you up. This guide has some helpful advice for dealing with that issue.
  • This feature makes me love Kevin Russ, one of my favorite instagrammers, even more.
  • Thank you, Debenhams (a big time UK department store), for actually featuring models of all types!
  • Ryan Gosling HATES cereal. HATES it.
  • This photo essay asks, “Is there an average McDonald’s customer?”
  • Mandi takes Laura Petrie’s classic wardrobe from The Dick Van Dyke Show, and colorizes it!
  • Striking side by side photos that illustrate American inequalities.

Lost in LA – Hamburgers!

9 May

hamburgers

LA has a reputation for frou-frou, veggie, healthy living. Yes, there are a ton of vegetarian places around, and you can get your precious, perfectly constructed tiny plates at a bunch of fancy restaurants. But you know what LA is really great for? A damn good, hearty hamburger.  As an unapologetic carnivore, let me introduce you to a few of my favorites:

1. The localish chain with the best custom options:

The Counter

Four locations in LA, almost 40 worldwide

Custom Burger @ The Counter

Are you picky about your burger? Or incredibly creative? At The Counter, you get to choose exactly how you want your burger, from the type of patty (1/3 pound? Full pound? Beef or chicken patty? In a bun or in a bowl?) to the type of cheese (everything from regular cheddar to soft ripened brie) to the very creative toppings (Grilled pineapple? Marinated artichokes? Horseradish mayo?). Believe me, this is a crowd pleasing place.

Yes, this is a chain, but it started about ten years ago in Southern California, and it still keeps its Socal feel. And really, these aren’t your normal chain style burgers. They are truly delicious.

My choice? Turkey burger with blue cheese, sauteed onions and dried cranberries, with those addicting crispy onion strings as a side. Yes, please.

2. Best NOT customizable burger:

Father’s Office

1018 Montana Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403

3229 Helms Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90034 (Culver City Location)

Fathers Office

If there’s a joint that has a brand burger, it’s Father’s Office. No substitutions or requests allowed. You get the burger just how they make it. Thank goodness, it’s delicious. It is a bit on the pricey side, but many Los Angelenos I know swear by this burger. Plus, the beer selection at this place is pretty darn impressive, and the atmosphere is pretty darn cozy.

The Office Burger

And, I’d just like to put in a word for the sweet potato fries. The perfect mix of salty and sweet, crisp and soft…they are seriously what dreams are made of.

3. Best burger joint poised to take over the whole gosh darn food world:

Umami Burger

15 locations in California, 13 in Southern California

"Umami Burger"

Umami Burger started as a burger place but now is the Umami Food Group, including a deli, a pizza place, a Vietnamese restaurant and a ton of burger locations. All of it’s good, but the burgers are outrageous. The original “Umami Burger” has a parmesan crisp (because the best cheese is crispy cheese, obviously) and shiitake mushrooms. Feeling extra testosterone-y? The “Manly Burger” has beer-cheddar cheese and bacon lardon. I know. Your arteries are thanking you already.

4. My favorite all around:

The Golden State

426 N. Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036

Golden State: Interior

In some ways, I consider Golden State a friend. Just months after I moved into my neighborhood, it moved in around the corner, heralding the start of a slight restaurant renaissance. I got to know the waiters and owners by sight…and they kinda, sorta seemed to recognize me. Golden State was a go-to for our friends. You can always count on Golden State for a damn good dinner made from mostly local ingredients (usually. Sometimes it was just too packed!). The beer selection is yummy. And, to top it all off, they have a small ice cream counter with my favorite ice cream — Scoops!

But really, the whole place centered around its amazing burger.

This is everything a hamburger should be: medium rare, sharp cheese, good bacon and a soft, yet substantial bun. Golden State doesn’t have to try too hard, because they know how to do it right every single time. There’s no question. If I had one more hamburger to eat before the end of the world, it would be this one.

Those Summer Days.

6 May

It’s the first Monday of summer break…and I completely forgot to post. Like, didn’t even think of it until 2 pm. Whoops.

And I wish I had a good reason! I mean, if I was out sunning myself or on a road trip, that would be one thing…but no. I was at my archives job and then came home to eat apples and peanut butter while watching a classic 1989 episode of Roseanne (John Goodman is my homeboy). This is real talk, y’all.

So, what are the things that I’m excited to do this summer?

He fell for my line.jpg

  •  Eat my weight in cherries. Immediately regret it.
  • Marathon the new season of Arrested Development while eating frozen bananas!
  • Outdoor concerts. What up, Hollywood Bowl?! And outdoor movies! Heyyy Hollywood Forever!
  • Baseball games! Astros, Dodgers and Angels, at least.
  • Lying in the sun at the beach…and somehow managing to avoid a sunburn while I do so.
  • Finding more fireflies in Austin! I’ve only seen them once, but they are pure magic.
  • Cold smoothies for breakfast on hot mornings.
  • Picnics wherever, whenever.
  • Road trips, both solo and with friends.
  • Celebrating the marriages of some dear friends and family members.
  • Fireworks and birthday cake.
  • Exploring all the fresh fruit options at the farmers market.
  • Daisy dukes (well, as close as I get to Daisy Dukes) and short skirts. It’s summer. I DO WHAT I WANT.

What about you guys? Anything I forgot?

What I Learned:

  • There is proof that Jamestown settlers during a horrible, starving winter ate a 14 year old girl. Um. Yeah. This article is both fascinating and horrifying.
  • I knew that Steve Martin played the banjo. I knew that he dabbled in bluegrass. I DID NOT know that he founded an award entitled the “Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass.” And that he wrote a song for Vince Gill and Dolly Parton on his album “The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo.” Well done, Steve Martin. Comedian, Bruin, Author, former Disneyland employee, bluegrass enthusiast…I love you more and more.

Found this little store tucked into a neighborhood not far from my house. Love it!

Found this little store tucked into a neighborhood not far from my house. Love it!

What I Learned:

  • LA has once again taken its place at the top of the heap…WORST TRAFFIC IN NORTH AMERICA!!! Wooooooooo!!!! Austin actually ranks 5th, but if you were measuring the amount of time people spend complaining about the traffic, Austin would win hands down.
  • Fox bought the rights to do Guys and Dolls, one of my favorite musicals of all time, AND they might have Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum on board. You guys. YOU GUYS.

  • Are you ready to feel old? These super-cuts of pop culture from 1997, 1999 and 2002 took me back to my junior high and high school days…which didn’t seem all that long ago until I saw all the bad late 90′s fashion. I do have to say…1997 Usher is super hot. Or, as I would have said at the time, super fiiiiine.

What I learned:

  • The world is scary. People can be horrible, governments can be cowardly and fertilizer plants can explode. But, people can also be kind, generous and heroic. Wishing everyone some R&R and peace after a really hard week.
