Yesterday was the first official day of summer! Woohoo! Us Los Angelenos are still socked in with June gloom, so I haven’t seen the sun in a week or so, but I know that warm days are coming. And what do you do on warm days?
Drinking pitchers of fruity, ice cold alcoholic drinks with friends outside on a hot day is one of life’s best, happiest pleasures. I will always link the summer in Britain with a jug of Pimms, full of cut up strawberries, cucumbers and apples. Visiting friends in Spain meant pitchers of delicious sangria. Going to my family’s cabin every summer with my girlfriends means that we will at one point create a pitcher of “meadow madness”, the recipe of which is basically — find whatever liquor you can and add any fruit/mixer you can find. Mix. Enjoy. Really, it’s all goooooooood.
Here are a few drink recipes that I’m dying to try during summer 2012, aka the summer of the booze:
Mix together rum, strawberry simple syrup, mint, lime juice and sliced fresh strawberries, and you get this amazing looking strawberry mojito from Iowa Girl Eats. Again, I’m sure the fresh fruit in the drink makes it totally healthy. Yeah.
If you’re a summer traditionalist, then you’re probably never very far from a glass of lemonade. Amp it up a bit with “Muddled Lemonade” from the Parker Springs Palm Springs hotel (and shared by NJ in LA). It’s basically you’re usual lemonade…with sprite and ample amounts of citrus vodka.
And lastly, if you’re a summer birthday kid like I am, enjoy a “Boozy Birthday Cake Shot” from Sweetapolita. Ok, they’re a bit complicated as you need whipped cream flavored vodka (yes, it exists), cake flavored vodka (yep, that exists too), half and half, chocolate liqueur and actual cake mix…but aren’t they cute! It’s your birthday. Guilt a friend into making them for you.
HAPPY SUMMER TO ALL!
