28 New Things: Sufjan Stevens Concert!

10 Dec

One of my goals this year is to go to at least three concerts, since I do live in the Live Music Capital of the World! Yep, that is an official title. Austin has more live music venues per capita than any other city…according to the tourist office at least.

It certainly seems like the live music capital! When I go out, I hear live music almost every time…whether I want to or not. There is official parking zones at night in downtown Austin for musicians to unload their equipment. There’s a special organization here that offers low cost health insurance to Austin musicians.  Really, it’s a very cool, musical place.

So, I listen to a lot of passive live music, yet, I always find it hard to get my act together to actually plan and buy tickets for a concert I want to see! I have no idea why. Luckily, an awesome friend cajoled me into going to the Sufjan Stevens Christmas Concert, and I’m so glad I did.

Sufjan puts on a show. An odd show. There were blow up unicorns thrown into the audience. There was a huge “Wheel of Christmas” that decided the next song that would be played. There were singers in snowman outfits. It’s something. But so much fun.

I know it’s hard to tell from the quality of this picture, but yes, that is Sufjan in a “Christmas Unicorn” costume, complete with horn and bike helmet.

I wept while listening to “Chicago” during his encore. That was my go-to mopey song my senior year of college. I never thought I’d be hearing it live and still getting all choked up about it five years later.

“All things go, all things go.”

One concert down, two to go!
