Freaks and Geeks.

20 Dec

There are very few TV shows that I love like I love Freaks and Geeks.

FG full cast

Freaks and Geeks is only one perfect, wonderful season that really sums up what high school is like. No one is sure of themselves (even the kids who are trying to act like they could care less), everyone is at the mercy of adults, and it’s a mixture of horribly awkward and wonderfully happy. When else but in high school would you accidentally let your mom break up with your boyfriend? Or try out being a punk for a night…only to come home in tears? Or go to the shadiest weirdo to get fake IDs made?

FG geeks

Freaks and Geeks is the beginning of the Apatow crew, so the cast is just ridiculously good — Jason Segel just breaks your heart as the sweet kid who wants to be a musician, but isn’t nearly talented enough; Martin Starr makes the perfect gawky nerd who kind of loves himself the way he is (and who also explains why French kissing is the most disgusting thing on the face of the earth…he may have a point); and James Franco plays the messed up, but sweet bad boy. Daniel Desario will always be James Franco’s best part, no matter what arty stuff he gets into next. He reached perfection in 1999. Sorry, dude. It’s all downhill from here.

FG freaks

January’s Vanity Fair is edited by Judd Apatow and features the best oral history of Freaks and Geeks. Please go read it. Now. And if you have somehow missed watching Freaks and Geeks, it’s on Netflix Instant. GO NOW. WATCH NOW.

FG freak boys

FG babies

And because no Freaks and Geeks post can be complete without at least one video of a young Jason Segel singing his heart out to his ex, I present “Lady L”:

So, I’ve become slightly obsessed with watching Freaks and Geeks I think maybe because I *can’t* watch Freaks and Geeks. As in, it’s not on UK Netflix, and it’s not available on Lovefilm (which is like the Netflix delivery service thing) and I just don’t know what to do! But I think I like it already, without having seen it. Which is kind of stupid, obviously…

Give me a shout!
