July and August Currently…late!

5 Aug

Los Angeles County - 1928 Front and Back Cover Foldout)

I somehow managed to miss both July and August’s “Currently posts”! And I’m doing so much good stuff currently! Come on, Mandy. Get it together.

I’m currently…

Eating…

Some crazy good Korean food in KTown! After a spa day out with a friend, we decided to grab dinner at Ham Ji Park, as it had great Yelp reviews. Um. The stacks of piping hot pork ribs? Delicious. The hearty, flavorful neck bone and potato stew? Also delicious. I’m so glad we gave the place a shot!

I’m also getting in some Trader Joe’s faves before I head back to Austin. We are supposedly getting a Trader Joe’s in September though! Can’t wait!

Oh, and I’m eating all the cheap avocados while I can. Californians, we have it really good.

Listening to…

I just went to a really fun Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. They are the best sing-along band! All three of the songs they played at their NPR Tiny Desk Concert were highlights of the concert.

“San Francisco” by Foxygen has also been in pretty heavy rotation on my iPod. It’s perfect summer, hippie California music.

Watching…

Orange is the New Black! Ok. I know that everyone is into this show right now, but come on. It’s so good. All the characters are compelling, the dialogue is snappy, yet realistic, and Crazy Eyes is the human version of Trixie! I’m so glad to hear that they are already planning on releasing a season 2. Well done, Netflix.

Also, this summer I was able to see a screening of The Crash Reel, a documentary about snowboarder Kevin Pearce who suffered a traumatic brain injury. It really documents the culture of snowboarding, the dangers and appeal of extreme sports, and, above all, a family’s strength. I thought I’d have no interest in the subject matter, but I was riveted. I believe the movie has already shown on HBO, and it should be coming to regular movie theaters in December. Seek it out if you can.

Enjoying...

The LA weather before I have to go back to Austin weather. 70-80 degrees, low humidity and blue skies…I never fully appreciated it until I lived in Texas. How amazing is this place?! HOW DOES THIS EVEN EXIST?!?! I keep looking at my phone and seeing the 105 degree temperatures in Austin. God. Better enjoy this now.

Also, of course, seeing all my friends. It’s been a good, fun-filled summer. Hopefully now I can really hit the ground running as the school year takes off!

Pondering…

Aging…and no, not in the wrinkles way. I’m turning 28 in a month, which seems like a good, sturdy number. A few of my girlfriends and I have been discussing how, even over the past three or four years, we feel as though we have come into our own. Some of us have less body issues, some feel more confident in their careers, and some feel more able to handle their love lives. Most of my friends who are in their thirties say that they really felt a huge surge in confidence in their thirties, and that they wouldn’t go back to being in their twenties. I wonder how true that will be for me. I do feel that I’m getting better about not caring about things that don’t matter, which is huge. Hopefully it’s all good things from here on out!

Listening to…

Since I read Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop, I’ve been on an 80s hip hop kick. The videos are absolutely ridiculous. My favorite? Run DMC’s “It’s Tricky.” If Penn and Teller ever steal my chain in a rigged card game, I’ll make sure to call Run DMC, so they can rescue me with their purple, furry helicopter. Yessss.

Watching…

The new season of Arrested Development on Netflix. It’s great to see the Bluths together again, even though I find the season a bit uneven. I know that they had to do episodes focusing on only one character at a time to accommodate the stars’ other filming schedules, but I finish they hadn’t needed to do that. Arrested Development’s is at its best when it is flipping between all the ridiculous situations that the characters find themselves in. Also, the cast has an incredible rapport. So, yes, I’m excited to see it’s back, but I think I’ll stick with the first three seasons from here on out.

Eating…

Kolaches! Kolaches are a Czech dumpling thing that can be either sweet or savory, and, due to the large Czech population, is really popular in Central Texas. There are a bunch of kolache chains around that have all sorts of flavors. I had my first two, and, honestly, thought they were only ok, but I’m going to try them again in a smaller town outside Austin tomorrow on my way to New Mexico. Also, supposedly the best kolaches are in West, Texas — the city that was devastated by a fertilizer plant explosion a month ago. Another reason to keep donating to their recovery efforts!

Thanking my lucky stars for…

All the friends I’ve made here in Austin over the past nine months. This could’ve been a very, very lonely year, but I was so lucky to meet some folks who have the same brand of crazy that I do. Also, having able bodied friends who own pick-up trucks and can help you move all your crap into a storage unit? AMAZING.

And, of course, all my friends and family in California. Can’t wait!

Roid Week 2010 - he likes dandelions

April has been the prettiest month I’ve seen so far in Texas. Wildflowers absolutely everywhere! Abnormally mild weather! Cute fuzzy little caterpillars crossing the road! And tonight, my first firefly sighting! I swear, fireflies are more magic than insect.

And, more importantly, I was able to figure out what exactly I’m doing with the next three months of my life! It may have taken almost all month, but I have an internship. I have a plan. As school ends tomorrow, May is my month to relax before I head back into the working world.

Alright May. Let’s do this.

I’m currently…

Craving…

Really good Chinese food! Dim sum, dumplings, hand stretched noodles, green onion pancakes, and my favorite, custard tarts! I haven’t been able to find too much of that here in Austin. I am fully prepared to gorge myself when I get back to California.

Listening…

I made a California playlist on Spotify a few days ago that I can’t leave alone. Some of the highlights:

“The Only Place” by Best Coast

“I Love LA” by Randy Newman (Can I just take a moment to acknowledge how awesome this music video is? 1980’s LA at it’s best! I would go to any beach party that Randy Newman throws.)

Planning…

My move into a studio apartment! This will be the first time that I live entirely alone, and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s all very adult. I’ve been scrolling through Apartment Therapy and a whole bunch of small space interior design blogs for inspiration, because, although the place isn’t too small, there will be a few storage issues. Teeny tiny kitchen, I’m looking at you!

Also, I’m getting excited for my road trip back to LA. Yes, west Texas is big and boring, but I’m hoping to find some cool stuff along the way. Marfa, perhaps? Visit a friend in El Paso? Food cart food in Tucson? It could be great! I’ll stock up on an audiobook or two first though.

Discovering…

New to me country singer Caitlin Rose. I saw her at a fun country concert at the Mohawk, and she was absolutely fantastic. The girl has an old soul style, complete with country belting power. Plus, her mom won a Grammy for writing with Taylor Swift. I like this fact.

Loving…

Warm evening runs, counting down classes until summer vacation (um, I’m at 1 now); HAVING a summer vacation; the movie Safety Not Guaranteed; new episodes of Mad Men; re-runs of Sex and the City on tv during my lunch break; recording a rap for a class presentation and blowing all the other presentations away; meeting new, nice folks; going on dates that are so bad that you win the worst date ever award from your friends (looking on the bright side here); and visits from old friends, even if they are only for a night.

Planning…

Things are getting serious about my summer internship. I need to figure out where exactly I’m going, what I’m doing with my new to me studio apartment (more on that later!) while I’m gone, and how I’m going to finance the whole darn thing. Nope. Not stressful at all. I’m sure that this will be a cakewalk compared to next spring though when I’m job hunting. Yikes.

Running…

Not nearly as much as I should! I signed up to run my first 10k in two weeks, and yet I can’t seem to get myself together to train nearly as much as I should. I keep sticking in a mile or two before Zumba class, but I’m not sure if that’s really going to do it. If anyone has some awesome songs to add to my running playlist, I would appreciate it. I need the pep!

Eating…

TRADER JOOOOOOOOES! I made the trip down to San Antonio yesterday, because every so often a girl needs her Trader Joe’s delicacies! New favorites? Roasted coconut chips! So coconutty, so satisfying, and not all that bad for you! Also, those sea salt and turbinado sugar chocolate almonds are perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth. It’s one of the few candies that I can eat in moderation. Well, mostly. I also picked up coconut oil. Um, how exactly do I use that?

And good news! The Trader Joes that was supposed to go into downtown Austin seems to be perpetually stalled, but a Trader Joes is going into Rollingwood, a super close Austin suburb, in August! No more driving an hour and a half to get to a Trader Joes! Life changing!

Listening…

Kendrick Lamar. Man. He played a few shows at SXSW, and I couldn’t get into a single one, which was a major bummer. I’m still getting into the whole Kendrick ouevre, but I’ve had “Swimming Pools (Drink)” and “The Recipe” on repeat for a couple months now. “The Recipe” has particularly become my theme song. I mean, it is pretty much has everything I like — LA pride, a great sample, a driving beat and some dirty lyrics. That’s pretty much all I want in a rap song.

“Swimming Pools (Drink)”:

Okay, now open your mind up and listen to me Kendrick/
I am your conscience, if you do not hear me/
Then you will be history Kendrick/
I know that you’re nauseous right now/
And I’m hoping to lead you to victory Kendrick

“The Recipe”:

Watching…

Documentaries! So many! Jiro Dreams of Sushi is just magical and makes you soooo hungry. First Position, which follows a few kids hoping to win a world class ballet competition, is fascinating. How are they so bendy?! Why are some of those parents so insane?! And How to Survive a Plague was a sobering look at the political activism that surrounded the AIDS crisis of the late 80’s and early 90’s. I thought I knew a good amount about that time, but apparently I was completely ignorant. I highly recommend all of them. And they’re all on Netflix Instant! Woo!

And if you’re looking for a non-documentary recommendation, check out Safety Not Guaranteed. Sweet, funny, poignant…and time travel.

Hoping…

That everything works out. I mean, that’s always the hope right? But wow. I really hope it right now. Who knew that your twenties were so uncertain and unsettled? Oh yeah. Everyone.

Celebrating…

My awesome friend Emily’s birthday! We threw a party at my house this past weekend, and it actually went pretty well. There was plenty of music, good only slightly awkward people, and beer. So. much. beer. Happy birthday, Em!

Oh, and also Happy Texas Independence Day y’all. Don’t mess!

Eating…

Those Cadbury Mini Eggs that magically appear in stores for the month before Easter and then disappear again into the ether. I have no idea how they taste as good as they do…but man. I can’t stop. It’s horrible.

Listening…

I still can’t get enough of Kacey Musgraves. I wish I could find more of her stuff, but luckily her first full album comes out on March 19th! In the mean time, I’ll be listening to her cover of Miley Cyrus’s song “See You Again.” Find it on Spotify. You won’t be sorry.

Watching…

American Horror Story! My co-workers used to talk about how fun this show was a couple years ago, but I never took their advice to actually watch it. The billboards for the show were just way too weird and scary. But I decided to give it a try when I saw it on Netflix Instant, and I’m loving it. It’s the perfect mix of camp and thrills, and I would watch Jessica Lange be her crazy self all day long. I would not recommend watching it on your ipad at the gym though. Um, not safe for gym.

Anticipating…

SXSW! Austin is going to go completely off the hook in about a week, and I can’t wait. I didn’t buy a wristband, but I’m ready to float around see what happens. I’m pretty sure that’s the right way to do SXSW. Plus, I have a few friends coming in from LA, so I’m going to have some of my old partners in crime around! It’s going to be cray.

Let’s do this, March.

lady sybil

I feel as though I spent three quarters of January in getting back into school/work mode.  I thought I’d get back to Austin and start cranking out internship applications, fantastic workouts and great comments in class. Instead…I’ve been lazy. Finally, this week, things have seemed to click. I’m back in the game, baby!

I’m currently…

Watching…

DOWNTON ABBEY! I’ve always loved this show (I’m pretty sure it’s made for ex-English major/UK study abroad students/UK study abroad counselors/costume drama lovers. So, it’s basically just made for me), and the break between season two and three seemed to take forever! I’m so glad it’s back.

I don’t want to spoil anything from this past week’s episode, but wow. I made the mistake of watching it on my ipad at the gym, and ended up ugly crying while on the elliptical. All the emotions. Too many emotions.

Eating…

Healthy again! Woo! I really let go during the holidays, which, while I don’t regret any of the delicious meals I had, made me feel a bit off the rails. Last week I actually made proactive steps to get my eating habits under control, and I feel so much better about myself. It’s amazing how anxiety can just melt away when you actually take steps to fix your situation. You’d think I had figured that out by age 27, huh?

Mourning…

The loss of my absolute favorite karaoke bar in Austin! This is not your average karaoke bar. In true weird Austin fashion, this is the place where EVERYONE is welcome. Cowboys, goths, bros, sorority girls, a one-eyed guy who goes by Cyclops! And everyone’s weirdly friendly! Unfortunately, they’re shutting down for reasons I don’t understand, so a friend and I hit it up for its last night. Neither of us sang, but the people watching was, as usual, top notch. RIP Canary Hut Pub.

Resolving…

To drink more water! Why can’t I do this?!

Listening…

My latest Spotify obsessions:

“Merry Go Round” by Kacey Musgrave. The country song that punctures the myths of the perfect rural small town.

“Hot Knife” by Fiona Apple. Because how can you not love Fiona? And the loopiness of this track is hypnotizing/sexy.

And, yeah, I may be reverting to a 13 year old girl. Last month I featured Bieber, and this month…Conor Maynard. I just can’t help it. Their music is ridiculously catchy! As Conor would say, “Houston, I think we have a problem.”

Loving…

Smart, interesting class discussions, this really good chicken bean crockpot recipe, Buffalo Exchange, having super productive Tuesday mornings since I don’t have class until 12, bike rides in this ridiculously warm, Texas weather, fun potlucks with amazing steak tacos, the gym emptying out as the resolution folks are giving up, fun mail.

What about y’all?

Visiting…

I’ve been all over California over the past three weeks, but the trip is finally coming to an end. I’m writing from a fancy SF cafe right now, as I just celebrated New Year’s Eve here with a ton of old friends. I love visiting these folks I’ve known for ages, as it’s more about catching up and having fun than running around the city trying to see everything. That being said, I did drop by the Cable Car Museum today, which was surprisingly fascinating. I’m also on a mission to find Chinatown’s BEST dan tat (Chinese egg custard tarts that I am addicted to).

Eating…

Um, everything? Seriously, the past few weeks has not been good for my diet, but hey. I’m only in California for a few weeks, so I’m going to eat all the food I miss! Highlights: the perfect plain bagel with cream cheese from The Bagel Broker, dim sum twice(!), sushi and a ridiculously good tempura salad, Scoops ice cream, amazing baklava, and lots of homemade meals. Super happy camper…even if I’m dreading getting on the scale back in Austin.

Listening…

“Bad Girls” by MIA was obviously the New Year’s Eve song.

“Same Love” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis has been in my head for the past few days.

And can we just say that I totally became a Belieber this year. Get it, Justin. (And how amazing is it that this music video has synchronized swimming?)

Resolving…

Keep up the 5-6 workout a week schedule, but throw in a bit more yoga so I stay flexible. Run a 10k and MAYBE a half marathon. Maybe. Cook more healthy meals. Get a kickass summer internship. Watch where my money goes. Read at least 60 books. Get better at partner dancing (I will be a fantastic two-stepper by the end of my stay in Texas. I WILL!) Cry less, laugh more.

Loving…

Long walks in big cities, hugs from old friends, life conversations with the people who know you best, surprisingly good rental movies (“The Five-Year Engagement” is pretty good, though it may make you think a bit harder about your past and present relationships than you want to…), sweeping views of San Francisco, conversations about books with my cousin’s super cool 9 year old son, adventures.
